Home Art Gallery Asian old Masters Sindutomo Sudjojono Biography
C o-founder of PERSAGI (Indonesian Painters Association) in 1937, Sudjojono led the movement to reject the ‘Mooi Indie’ style of naturalistic, romantic, landscape painting’s that were particularly popular with members of the European community in Indonesia at that time.

Sudjojono and his fellow PERSAGI members sought a synthesis of traditional and modern painting while developing a style of their own which was uniquely Indonesian. The antagonism between PERSAGI and the Mooi Indie followers is said to be the definitive characteristic in the early development of modern Indonesian art.

Sudjojono believed that the artistic esthetics of Mooi Indie paintings was only laying open to beauty and exoticism. He offered a concept of art that would reflect the realistic condition and situation of Indonesian society of the time. This style of painting was characterized by humanistic, populist, and traditional-life themes in stylistic expressions that emphasized the artist’s subjective approach which characterized the development of Indonesian paintings of that period.
